Make the most of the new year by following these simple guidelines

Jan 24, 2022

The new year is a great time to create new goals. Whether it’s eating right or cleaning out the garage, here are some tips for making and reaching goals.

Goals should be specific, achievable and tied to a time frame

"I want to eat better" is a good idea, but not a goal. A goal could be, "I will eat vegetables every day by the end of the month." "I will save $200 by the end of March" is another good example of a goal.

Motivation is important. Are you saving for a vacation or a new gadget? Decide your why and write it down! Even better, break down your goal into manageable parts: "I will save $80/month toward my goal."

Accountability is also important. Tell at least one other person about your goal to help keep yourself accountable.

 Make a list
Lists are great ways to stay on track. Write down some big things you want to accomplish and some smaller things, too. Keep your list of goals short. It's a lot easier to reach two or three goals than five or more.

Check the list regularly
Don’t forget to check in and see how you’re doing. Just because you don’t achieve the big goals right away doesn’t mean you’re not making progress.

Reward yourself
When you succeed in achieving a goal, be it a big one or a small one, make sure to pat yourself on the back. Pick some way to treat yourself when you reach your goal.

Think positively
Positive thinking is a major factor in success. So instead of mulling over things that didn’t go quite right, remind yourself of things that did. When you fail (and you will at some point), pick yourself up (or call your accountability partner) and keep going!
